I was sitting, patiently listening as fellow peers received their awards when I skimmed the program to see what my Spanish teacher, Mr. Velez, had written about me. He ended with “may God continue guiding you on every step you take as a student and as a person” and to “never lose faith in God, he has a wonderful plan for you.” I almost forgot to breathe. I had spent the last half of the year treading water – trying so hard, staying up so late to study, spending countless hours at work. I had spent the last half of the year feeling almost betrayed by God. Where are you now?

Yet, the question is not where God is, but where are God’s people? It is through us that God chooses to reveal himself to the world.

I looked over at my teacher. All this time, God had provided me with an incredible model of a spiritual man to help me along through my junior year. When I walked into class exhausted or bitter, he always had a bible verse to uplift my spirit. When I panicked over how I was going to raise the money for this trip, he assured me that God will provide. When I doubted whether I was prepared to evangelize on this trip, he reminded me that if your heart is in the right place, God will take you as you are. He will also help you grow. I pray that God will use me to influence someone in my life in the way that Mr. Velez has influenced me. It doesn’t take much – a smile, a touch, a kind action, an invitation, a note with a bible verse – to let someone know that God loves them. You can find God in the most prevalent yet unexpected places – all you have to do is look.
